GoodWe, a well-known Chinese PV inverter and storage solution provider, recently launched its hybrid inverter, EO G2, aimed at more than 7,000 Philippine islands with unreliable or no grid connections. 

This 337 × 456 × 201 mm (W × H × D) inverter pairs with a PV array (via MPPTs), an AC grid (via a dedicated AC-output port), storage (via a battery port), and a diesel generator (through a ‘smart port’).  

It connects to a PV capacity range of 6 to 12 kW via built-in MPPT channels, each rated for 50 to 480 V and can carry up to 21 A. The number of channels varies between one and two depending on the inverter’s rated AC capacity. Each channel can carry a single PV string of up to 530 V. The company states that each inverter supports up to 200% PV oversizing (DC/AC) of its rated full-load power (AC) to maximize solar harvesting throughout sun hours. 

A lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) or lead-acid battery storage, with a voltage range of 40 to 60 V and a corresponding maximum charging/discharging current range of 70 to 130 A, can be paired with the inverter’s single battery port. According to the product datasheet, this port can carry a maximum charging and discharging power within a range of 3 to 6 kW and 3.3 to 6.6 kW, respectively.  

For AC-type energy sources, the inverter uses its AC output port rated for a full-load power range of 3 to 6 kW with corresponding currents of 13.1 and 26.1 A at 230 V. The datasheet lists its maximum apparent power as 8 kVA within a power factor range of -0.8 to +0.8. The PV capacity (mentioned earlier) is used to meet the site's loads first, while any excess is diverted to storage. 

During low sunlight or at night, the grid charges the batteries and supplies the loads. However, when this source is unreliable and experiences frequent outages, the inverter switches to off-grid mode in ≤4 ms. That is when its AC backup port, with a rated apparent power range of 3 to 6 kVA, comes into play. It is designed for an overload range of 3.3 to 6.6 kVA relative to the storage’s maximum discharge capacity. For inductive loads with high starting current, it supports up to 12 kVA for up to 10 seconds. But during extended outages or at a site without a grid connection, the storage alone can’t ensure an uninterrupted, stable power supply. For this, the inverter uses its ‘smart port’ to connect an 8 kVA single-phase diesel generator with a maximum rated current of 35 A. It ensures a stable power supply to end-users by syncing with the diesel generator, PV, and storage. The system has a maximum conversion efficiency of 98.6%. The product also supports capacity expansion, allowing up to 10 units to be connected in parallel.  

The company lists the inverter’s operating temperature range as -30 to +60 °C, thermal regulation by natural air circulation, and an ingress protection level of IP66. It is now commercially available in the Philippines. Earlier, GoodWe introduced this inverter in Bangladesh, Kenya, and Nigeria.
