New South Wales and Victoria mandate state-wide LDES projects
HiTHIUM, a battery energy storage system (BESS) provider, unveiled its latest product, ∞Power 6.9 MWh, for long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects in Australia at an internal launch event in Sydney.
Head of Australia at Modo Energy, Wendel Hortop, opened the session with his keynote presentation on the rise of 8-hour LDES. He emphasized the rising importance of LDES infrastructure amid the country’s growing share of renewable energy and its impact on grid stability. New South Wales has mandated utility BESS projects with continuous discharge capability of up to 8 hours, targeting up to 28 GWh long-duration storage by 2033. Victoria also enacted a similar LDES framework.
The event was followed by the new product launch. According to the company, the BESS is housed in a 20-foot container and is equipped with 1,300 Ah battery cells. Compared to a 4-hour standard storage system, the BESS is built with LDES-dedicated cells and adopts more advanced thermal control mechanisms. Each container unit can deliver up to 6.9 MWh of continuous discharge power for up to 8 hours.
