PV inverter and energy storage system (ESS) maker Suntech debuted its latest 10-foot containerized energy storage system (ESS), SunStorage PRO-STE-1-ML-500P, in Ukraine. The company says the product targets consumers focused on energy independence and resilience in unreliable or no-grid conditions. 

The ‘all-in-one’ ESS houses storage, a power conversion system (PCS), a liquid-cooling mechanism, and an STS switch within a 2,991 × 2,438 × 2,591 mm (W × D × H) container. It consists of 20 lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery packs, each rated at 52.2 kWh, with a system-level maximum storage capacity of 1,044 kWh and a rated DC voltage of 832 V. The company specifies its available energy capacity as up to 936 kWh. It uses 314 Ah LFP cells. 

When paired with an intermediate PCS, this storage is rated to deliver or absorb a full-load 3-phase (400 V) power of 500 kW to or from the grid. According to the product spec sheet, it can complete each cycle (charging/discharging) at 0.5P in almost 2 hours or up to the maximum discharge capacity. It shifts to off-grid mode within 20 ms of a grid outage and delivers 500 kW of rated full-load discharge power via a backup load port. The company recommends limiting maximum backup power to 350 kW or 70% of the rated full-load power when the connected loads include motors or other types of impact loads. The system has a guaranteed life of more than 8,000 cycles.  

The system can also be turned into a PV-plus-storage system by pairing a PV array with the ESS via an external PV inverter. For this, the system has a dedicated PV input port with a maximum rated capacity of 800 A. In addition to integrating renewable energy, users can connect a diesel generator set with a rated full-load current of 800 A to improve energy resilience during unstable grid conditions. According to the company, this system also supports PV-plus-storage microgrids, commercial & industrial (C&I) energy storage, and remote applications without a grid connection. Its internal energy management system (EMS) coordinates PV, storage, grid, and diesel generator in real time and enables functions that align with site conditions and requirements. A cloud-based monitoring platform also provides remote access to system status, battery parameters, and power data, supporting centralized operation & maintenance (O&M). The ESS has a communication interface that supports the Modbus TCP/IP protocol. 

The product specifies thermal regulation based on a liquid-plus-air hybrid cooling system, an operating temperature range of -25 to +55°C (derating starts above 45°C), and a noise level of ≤80 dB.
