Strategic Collaboration

• TotalEnergies and Amazon have announced a new strategic collaboration
• Amazon has entered PPAs for 474 MW renewable energy capacity with the French company
• It will come from TotalEnergies's US and European renewable energy projects and expected to expand to the Middle East and Asia Pacific
• Amazon will turn into a key cloud provider for TotalEnergies through AWS under the agreement

French energy giant TotalEnergies, earlier Total, has entered into a strategic collaboration with global online marketplace behemoth Amazon, which also comprises renewable energy agreements.

Under the agreements reached, Amazon has signed power purchase agreements (PPA) to procure 474 MW renewable energy from TotalEnergies' US and European renewable energy projects. Both expect to expand their cooperation in the Middle East and Asia Pacific.

According to TotalEnergies, "By supplying renewable energy and potential battery energy solutions, TotalEnergies will contribute to Amazon's commitment to power operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040."

In another agreement, Amazon will turn into a key cloud provider for TotalEnergies with its Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling the French company to accelerate its move to the cloud, boosting its IT transformation, and digitalizing its operations.

TotalEnergies aims to increase its renewables portfolio aiming to have 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewables by 2025, growing from 7 GW at the end of 2020, and eventually scaling it up to 100 GW by 2030. TotalEnergies is the major shareholder of both US solar company SunPower, and Singapore headquartered cell and module producer Maxeon Solar.

Amazon touts itself as the world's largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in Europe and globally. In June 2021, when it invested in 14 new renewable energy projects, the American company said it will be able to achieve its 100% renewable energy target for its operations 5 years ahead of schedule by 2025 (see Amazon Renewable Energy Portfolio Swells To 10 GW).
