Chinese solar energy company Renshine Solar exited 2022 with a 'record' 29.0% steady-state power conversion efficiency of all-perovskite tandem solar cell developed in-house. This new cells exceeds its previous record of 28.0% achieved in June 2022. The company now expects to exceed 30% in 2023.
Japan Electrical Safety and Environment Technology Laboratories (JET) has certified the efficiency claim that was reported for a designated area of 0.04888 cm².
"In half a year, the efficiency of perovskite stacked cells has increased by 1%. This growth rate is unmatched by other technologies. The efficiency of crystalline silicon cells has only increased by 0.1% in the past 5 years," said Renshine Solar Co-Founder and CEO Shen Chengyong.
The company is getting ready to bring its 150 MW pilot line into production in Q3/2023 to start mass production in 2024. Subsequent construction of the GW line will begin at the end of 2023, but it will depend on the 'commissioning results' of the pilot line. As of now it is operating a 10 MW production line.
Renshine Chairman and a Professor at Nanjing University, Tan Hairen believes tandem perovskite cells can achieve far more efficiency than single junction perovskites since laboratory efficiency of the latter has remained the same at about 25.7% in the last 2 or 3 years.
Renshine says as part of its roadmap in industrialization of perovskite technology, it will aim for maturing of single-junction cells leading to single-layer perovskite modules reaching 18% shipment efficiency within 2 years. Hairen added that the launch of tandem cells may be half a year to a year later than single-junction cells and the expected shipment efficiency is 22%.
Chengyong shared that once the 18% efficiency for single junction cells is achieved, it can compete with cadmium telluride solar cells in tandem form, but it cannot replace crystalline silicon technology.
In October 2022, the Chinese company reported a 'world record' steady-state efficiency of 24.5% for a perovskite tandem cell module (see 24.5% Tandem Solar Module Efficiency Record).
