Germany-based Bison Pro has developed a unique solution for excess energy generated by PV systems. The solution can benefit projects that lack energy storage backup or find it too expensive to integrate with the PV system. Additionally, it can benefit power plants that do not receive government subsidies or are on the verge of shutting down due to lack of economic viability.

Bison Pro’s solution involves using the generated electricity for heating, but it also serves a business case before generating heat. The solution marketed as BisonPro Max uses high-performance computing (HPC) servers as the heating elements. Electricity powers these servers, which perform bitcoin-related computations and generate heat in the process. This heat is captured to supply the building or district heating systems or industrial processes, such as drying plants, greenhouses, swimming pools, et cetera.

A byproduct of this solution is the creation of digital assets in the form of Bitcoin, which the company claims will be credited into the customer’s wallet. According to Bison Pro, 1 W of electrical energy produces approximately 0.9 W of thermal energy. The company also developed software, BiHerder, that can be integrated into the grid and automate computing based on the system's energy-generation curve and the required load for consumption.

In 2025, the company commissioned its solution in Poland at a 1 MW ground-mounted PV system and is in the final testing phase. At this site, a BisonPro Max 36 has been installed, which is currently operated with only 25 Antminer S21+ Hyd mining machines. The company has an expansion target of all 36 mining machines at this site, after which it estimates the system could generate 0.5 Bitcoin per year. This is only from the excess electricity generated from the 1 MW installed system. The machines’ generated heat is recovered and supplied as useful heat.
