Industrial L, a battery storage platform for industrial applications from Germany's FENECON, has won the ees AWARD 2023. The storage solution of the company, which is suitable for outdoor usage, enables an alternative use for surplus electric vehicle (EV) batteries as part of the energy market. It enables easy integration of excess or second-life EV batteries into the cooling circuit.

With its impressive energy density and internal liquid cooling system, the Industrial L delivers an output of 736 kilowatts (kW) and boasts a total capacity of 1.28 megawatt hours (MWh). The use of 8 separate 92 kW KACO battery inverters creates high redundancy. All components can be easily replaced and – unlike with container solutions – the system does notrequire a crane for set-up. What sets the Industrial L apart is its user-friendly design and the utilization of an open-source-based energy management system known as FEMS. This powerful combination enables a diverse range of applications for Industrial L, from solar farms to electric vehicle charging stations and even industrial power needs. Moreover, during periods of low demand or part-load operation, the system intelligently optimizes efficiency and extends component lifespan by seamlessly ramping down to operate with just one of its 8 inverters. The Industrial L has been praised by the panel for its design, construction quality, and use of surplus and used EV batteries for a more sustainable energy storage solution.

FENECON also won another award – the EM-Power 2023 – for its FERESTO Rental Storage solution. This is an innovative leasing model that enables the fast integration of large-scale battery systems for commercial and industrial use. These systems can reduce peak demand on the grid, improve system stability, and reduce the costs of grid expansion. FENECON offers flexible lease periods of between one day and 60 months, with scalable storage capacities from 50 kilowatts to several megawatts. FERESTO Rental Storage also facilitates the widespread use of second-life EV batteries. These batteries are often discarded after their first use inEVs, but they can still have a lot of life left in them. FERESTO Rental Storage allows customers to rent these batteries for a fraction of the cost of new batteries, which makes them a more sustainable option. In addition to the above award-winning solutions, FENECON also presented an energy storage system concept for electric buses, which was also a finalist for The smarter E AWARD 2023.

The system installed in Brugg, Switzerland, consists of a 10-foot container with batteries that have a capacity of 352 kW and 328 kWh. It is powered by a photovoltaic installation on the roof of the bus station, which ensures that 100% of the solar power is used to power the buses. The system also includes a charging station for small vehicle batteries, which saves money and resources. The system can be expanded to a capacity of up to 600 kWh and an output of up to 700 kW if needed. The concept is designed to reduce the load on the power grid and provide a reliable source of power for the electric buses. It is also designed to be scalable, so it can be expanded to meet the needs of the bus fleet as it grows. The system is open source, which means that it can be easily modified and adapted to different applications.
