Key takeaways:

  • ISC’s cooperation with Solex Energy focuses on transferring ZEBRAplus, a back contact cell technology based on TOPCon

  • The partnership is expected to contribute to building domestic capabilities in high-efficiency cell manufacturing through technology transfer and training initiatives

  • ISC Konstanz has supported the majority of India’s active TOPCon production lines since 2022

At the Renewable Energy India (REI) Expo 2025, ISC Konstanz and Solex Energy announced a cooperation agreement. The partnership aims to establish a framework for technology development, training, and transfer of ISC’s ZEBRAplus cell technology, which is a TOPCon-based back contact cell concept.

ISC Konstanz has been collaborating with Indian manufacturers since 2017, starting with bifacial n-PERT technology in support of Adani Solar. Since 2022, the institute has supported the ramp-up of 5 production lines, 3 of which are TOPCon cell lines. According to ISC, around 70% of all active TOPCon production lines in India have received its technical support. It also notes that European equipment manufacturers, such as Centrotherm, RENA Technologies, ISRA Vision, WAVELABS, and HALM, have also played key roles in establishing these lines in India.

Its assistance has enabled Indian TOPCon cell lines to reach efficiencies exceeding 25%, claims ISC Konstanz. This new partnership with Solex is expected to help advance the back contact cell production based on TOPCon architecture in India. Although not officially confirmed, Solex’s planned 2 GW cell line, which is expected to start operations by 2027, is anticipated to receive technical and process support from ISC Konstanz.

“We’ve been working in India for more than ten years—and the biggest success isn’t just the technology, but the strong friendships and trust we’ve built. Now, with SOLEX, we are entering the next phase: ZEBRAplus means bringing the world’s most efficient solar cell concept to India, backed by German R&D and engineering excellence,” said Dr. Radovan Kopecek, Co-Founder and Director of ISC Konstanz.
