Pairing rooftop solar with heat pumps, EVs, and cooling can boost self-reliance and reduce subsidy needs. Simplifying grid connections, enabling plug-in systems, and funding low-income households will expand access. Smart controls and AI integration can empower consumers and accelerate adoption, said panelists – EUPD Research’s Ali Arfa, LCP Delta’s Jon Ferris, SolarPower Europe’s Jan Osenberg, and Sigenergy’s Luis Castillo – at the TaiyangNews #DistributedSolar event in conversation with TaiyangNews' Michael Schmela.

AI-Driven Energy Optimization

Luis Castillo, Sigenergy’s Sales & Solutions Director for UK & Ireland, showcased the company’s AI-enabled transformative capabilities of its Sigen app, which helps users proactively manage their energy and system usage. By learning from historical pricing, generation, and consumption patterns, the app optimizes integrated EV chargers and solar storage systems. He shared a case study from the UK and Polish markets to highlight its predictive power, which – according to Castillo – is being continuously refined to be more accurate and help maximize dynamic pricing benefits for homeowners.

Solar’s Transition Beyond Subsidies

LCP Delta Head of Flexibility and Storage Jon Ferris recalled the evolution of Europe's solar industry, from subsidy-driven beginnings to a complex market shaped by forecasting, storage, and direct marketing. Once focused on single-family homes, it now faces grid integration and wholesale risk challenges. As balcony solar and storage rise, the next phase demands flexible business models centered on abundant generation and behind-the-meter optimization for system-wide transformation.

Enhanced Cell Design For High Bifaciality

New advancements in n-type cells, including half-cut edge passivation, super thin fingers, and notably, a Wave Back Surface Field (WBSF)

Dr. Xinrui An, Jietai Solar’s R&D Manager, presented several advancements in n-type cells, including half-cut edge passivation, super thin fingers, and notably, a Wave Back Surface Field (WBSF). This innovation, he explained, reduces parasitic absorption by optimizing the rear passivation layer and creating an optically inhomogeneous structure. As a result, the cells achieved improved performance and bifaciality of up to 90%. He shared that Jietai (JTPV) is presently focused on TOPCon, but plans to launch Back Contact when market conditions align.

EU Solar Market Faces Reshaping

Jan Osenberg of SolarPower Europe speaks on EU Solar Markets
Jan Osenberg of SolarPower Europe speaks on EU Solar MarketsTaiyangNews.info

Jan Osenberg, SolarPower Europe’s Head of System Integration, highlights the evolving dynamics of the EU solar sector. While the overall market is projected to shrink by 1.4% YoY in 2025, the C&I segment – especially above 250 kW – remains resilient. Key challenges include the phasing out of feed-in tariffs, limited residential battery incentives, and regulatory shifts. Yet, upcoming policies, like the EPBD mandate for solar on public buildings and the Electrification Action Plan, aim to boost flexibility, decentralization, and long-term demand through electrification and energy sharing.

AIKO’s Product and Solution Manager, Mohammed Alshrouf, discussed the company’s upgraded INFINITE ABC panels (490 W to 500  W, 54-cell). The new modules feature copper-based tunneling contacts, a white dual-glass design, and improved aesthetics. Compared to TOPCon, ABC delivers 6% to 9% higher output, lower degradation, and a superior temperature coefficient of -0.26%/°C. With enhanced shadow resistance, micro-crack protection, and fire safety, ABC ensures high power, profitability, and long-term reliability across its entire upgraded series, added Alshrouf.

Installers Urge Tailored Manufacturer Support

EUPD Research’s Data Manager Ali Arfa underscored that manufacturers must actively engage with installers
EUPD Research’s Data Manager Ali Arfa underscored that manufacturers must actively engage with installersTaiyangNews.info

According to EUPD Research’s 2024–2025 PV and ESS InstallerMonitors, installers across key European markets have clear expectations from manufacturers. In Germany, the emphasis is on the need for improved technical assistance and after-sales service. French installers are calling for smaller modules due to installation challenges associated with larger formats. Polish installers highlight the importance of affordability, alongside innovation and efficiency. EUPD Research’s Data Manager Ali Arfa underscored that manufacturers must actively engage with installers, as prosumers tend to trust their advice, and market-specific needs must guide product development.

Residential Slowdown To Hit Solar Markets

EUPD Research Data Manager Ali Arfa anticipates a market slowdown in China and the US during H2 2025, with Germany and Italy also expected to post year-over-year declines. In much of Europe, this deceleration is largely attributed to weakening residential PV demand, which continues to dampen overall installation volumes. He stressed that despite the strength of C&I and utility-scale segments, many of these markets have historically been driven by residential solar uptake, making them more vulnerable to current headwinds.
