LONGi has announced 25.4% solar module efficiency based on its HPBC 2.0 cell platform
This efficiency level is certified by the German research institute Fraunhofer ISE
It claims this to be a new world record for crystalline silicon module efficiency
One of the world’s largest solar PV manufacturers LONGi Green Energy Technology says it has broken the 36-year monopoly of overseas PV brands by setting a world record for crystalline silicon solar module efficiency of 25.4%. Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE has certified this efficiency level.
It says the efficiency is a result of the company’s proprietary Hybrid Passivated Back Contact (HPBC) 2.0 cell technology.
This module efficiency exceeds the 24.9% aperture efficiency achieved by another back contact (BC) technology company, Singapore’s Maxeon Solar Technologies, and included in the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s champion module efficiency chart (see Maxeon Solar Announces 24.9 Percent Solar Module Efficiency).
Maxeon has been holding this top position since April 2023, first with 24.7%, which was later improved to 24.9% in March 2024. Japan’s Kaneka was its predecessor, which held the record module efficiency title since September 2016 with 24.4% efficiency.
Just last week, LONGi launched its Hi-MO X10 solar panels, based on HPBC 2.0, with 24.8% mass production efficiency, calling it a record (see LONGi ‘Breaks’ Global Module Mass Production Efficiency Record).
LONGi says in the 7 years, it has improved HPBC 1.0 to HPBC 2.0 with a cumulative investment of more than RMB 2 billion in R&D efforts and over a 1,000-strong high-level R&D team. It now touts nearly 200 BC technology patents to its credit. The mass production efficiency of its HPBC 2.0 cells has now exceeded 26.6%, and it has launched 2 high-efficiency modules based on HPBC 2.0 cell technology: Hi-MO 9 and Hi-MO X10.
