US-based SolarWindow Technologies has launched ElectroFlex, a 0.85 mm thick flexible solar module for flat and curved surfaces.

ElectroFlex has an adhesive layer on the rear that allows it to be bonded directly to flat, curved, and irregular surfaces. SolarWindow calls this installation method ‘peel-and-stick’. The module does not require conventional mounting racks and can be integrated into trucks, boats, trains, aircraft, and buildings where the weight or rigidity of glass modules may limit their use. The company is also targeting agricultural, infrastructure, utility, and specialty vehicle applications.

The module has a 5-layer structure comprising a 0.10 mm front encapsulant, 0.16 mm solar cells, 0.04 mm copper cell backing, a 0.30 mm composite layer, and a 0.25 mm rear substrate. These layers give the module a total thickness of 0.85 mm.

ElectroFlex incorporates BC cells with a stated cell efficiency of 24.4%. SolarWindow claims a power-to-weight ratio of 73 W/kg. It also says the module is up to 47 times thinner and 5.5 times lighter than a conventional solar module with racking while delivering similar power.

According to the company, ElectroFlex is UV-resistant and IP-rated for outdoor use. Its layered structure is designed to prevent cell microcracks when the module bends. However, SolarWindow has not published its bending limit, exact IP rating or durability test results.

The company will customize the module size and power output for each application. It will also provide system design, installation, wiring, and power-delivery components.

ElectroFlex is initially available to Tier-1 OEM manufacturers in the US. SolarWindow plans to expand availability to selected North American and Asian markets over the coming quarters.
