Solar EPC contractors have been invited to bid to set up a 4.5 MW solar power project near Chiredzi town in Masvingo province of Zimbabwe. It has been launched by non-profit conservation and eco-tourism organization The Malilawange Trust and Sustainable Agriculture Technology.
According to a local media reports, the winner will be required to implement the project in phases with 400 kW solar capacity to be set up under phase I accompanied by a 560 kW Tesla Li-Ion battery energy storage system (BESS). Another 1.1 MW will come up under phase II and 3 MW under phase III.
The winner will be required to set up the capacity through a build-own-operate-transfer (BOOT) model, transferring the project after 15 years of operations.
Electricity produced by the initial 2 phases will be sold to private sector under power purchase agreement, while the 3rd phase will sell power generated to the Zimbabwe Electricity and Distribution Company (ZETDC) under an agreement with Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA).

Last year in November 2020, Zimbabwean fruit and tobacco producer Nhimbe Fresh signed up for solar PV and storage capacity for its cold storage and packhouse facilities through Sun Exchange (see Zimbabwean Agricultural Company Goes For Solar & Storage).
