Bermuda Launches 7 MW Solar Power Tender

  • Bermuda’s Ministry of Public Works has issued a RFP round to seek proposals for around 7 MW solar capacity
  • It will be deployed for over 30 government buildings including schools, post offices, health care centers, and the like
  • Interested companies have time till October 7, 2022 to submit their proposals

The Ministry of Public Works in Bermuda has launched a request for proposals (RFP) round soliciting bids from interested companies to set up around 7 MW (6.965 MW to be specific) solar PV capacity to be installed on some 30 government owned buildings across the region.

Broad scope of work includes the design, supply of materials, permitting, installation, commissioning, testing, monitoring and leasing the rooftop solar systems for 25 years, with an option to extend the time period of the agreement by up to 5 years.

The installation will comprise solar modules with crystalline PV cells, inverter, rooftop mounting structure, and the like.

The Department of Public Lands and Building that’s going to act as a procurer specifies, “SPS system should be designed with necessary features. components and parts used in the SPS power plants and should conform to the international specifications and Solar Under Storm Part II: Select Best Practices for Resilient Roof-Mount PV Systems with Hurricane Exposure wherever such specifications are applicable.”

A list of government buildings where this capacity is scheduled to come up is available on the government website too. It includes schools, health care centers, post office, among others.

Launched on July 8, 2022, the last date to submit proposals is October 7, 2022. The government will identify 3 proponents and start negotiations with them. These companies will then be asked to submit best and final offer (BAFO) by February 24, 2023, finally announcing the winner on May 1, 2023, as per the tender schedule.

Back in December 2021, Bermuda announced its 1st utility scale solar power facility to have started commercial operations. With 6 MW capacity, the project was completed by Saturn Solar Bermuda 1 Ltd. It was said to provide up to 13% of the island’s energy needs to meet peak demand.
