The Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) of Botswana is contemplating the deployment of floating solar PV systems at its dams for which it has now launched a solicitation seeking a company to explore the same.

Site visits were planned for Gaborone, Bokaa, Lotsane, Letsibogo and Dikgatlhong dams in the 1st week of September.

Under an open international bidding process, it seeks to contract a company to carry out an assessment and technical feasibility study for the implementation of such project at its dams.

The suitable applicant must be registered with the country’s Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA). This tender is reserved for Citizen Owned Contractors.

The call was launched on August 26, 2024, with the last date of submissions being October 3, 2024. Details are available on WUC website with tender reference number WUC 061 (2024).

Botswana targets to increase the share of renewable energy to 30% in its energy mix by 2030, and further up to 50% by 2036, according to the World Bank that in July this year approved funds for the development of 335 MW renewable energy capacity in the country.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), at the end of 2023 Botswana’s total renewable energy capacity was 6 MW, all of which was solar PV.
