Key Takeaways
  • Brunei’s DOEPMO has opened a tender for grid-connected solar PV installations at 5 government buildings in the Brunei Muara district

  • The contract covers the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of rooftop and carport solar systems

  • International firms can participate only through a JV with a registered Brunei company

Brunei’s Department of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office (DOEPMO) has launched a tender for rooftop and carport solar PV installations at 5 government buildings.

Select buildings that will host these solar systems are located in Brunei Muara district in Negara Brunei Darussalam. The broad scope of work spans design, build, operate and maintenance of the grid-connected solar PV systems.

The tender is open to all domestic and international companies that have a proven track record of at least 2 years in design, installation and commissioning of grid-connected solar PV rooftop systems of similar scale and complexity.

International companies interested in participating in this tender must enter a joint venture (JV) agreement with a registered local Brunei company. They must be familiar with local industry standards, codes and regulations.

DOEPMO says the objective is to appoint a competent contractor to deliver technically sound, cost-efficient, and timely renewable energy solutions to support Brunei’s clean energy transition and sustainability commitments.

The last date to submit bids for this tender launched on June 8, 2026 is June 23, 2026.

Located on the island of Borneo near Malaysia, Brunei is rich in oil and gas reserves, hence fossil fuels are the predominant and cheap source of electricity in the country. However, the country is now diversifying its energy mix with renewable energy, particularly solar PV.

According to DOEPMO’s April 2025 report, 99.9% of the country’s population has access to grid electricity. Under the Brunei Darussalam National Climate Change Policy (BNCCP), the country targets to achieved at least 30% of total installed capacity mix by 2035 from renewable energy. This includes 200 MW solar PV by 2035.

At the end of 2025, Brunei’s total installed renewable energy capacity was only 6 MW, all of which came from solar PV, according to International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Last year, Malaysia’s Solarvest won the contract to build Brunei’s largest solar project with 30 MW AC installed capacity for an estimated BND 34 million investment (see Brunei’s ‘Largest’ Solar Plant With 30 MW AC Capacity).
