Key Takeaways
  • CIL has launched a competitive solicitation process to select a solar EPC contractor

  • The job is to establish 300 MW AC capacity at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat

  • Winning projects need to be built and commissioned within 12 months of the LOA signing

The world’s ‘single largest’ coal producer, Indian government-owned Coal India Limited (CIL), plans to set up a grid-connected, ground-mounted solar PV plant with 300 MW AC installed capacity. It has launched a tender seeking bidders for the project.

It won this capacity under phase XXI of Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited’s (GUVNL) auction for 600 MW grid-connected solar power capacity, to be established at Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat.

Through this call, the CIL seeks to hire an EPC contractor to build the project. The broad scope of work for the winner is to design, engineer, and supply all the necessary components including PV modules, construct, erect, test and commission the 300 MW AC project. Comprehensive operation and maintenance for 5 years is also part of the job description. The power plant needs to be installed the latest by January 31, 2026, or within 12 months of signing the letter of award (LOA).

The call with Tender ID 2024_CILHQ_316279_1 was launched on August 30, 2024. The last date to submit bids for the same is September 23, 2024. Details of the same are available here.

Currently, CIL produces around 83% of India’s entire coal output of which 80% are catered to the power sector. The country’s 69% of electricity mix comes from coal-fired power stations. The coal producer is now adding renewable energy to its portfolio to minimize its carbon footprint and to achieve the aim of becoming a net zero energy company.

CIL has been developing ground-mounted, floating, and hybrid solar power plants as it targets to develop 5 GW cumulative renewable energy capacity by FY 2025-26.
