Codelco has launched a call to procure 1,500 GWh/year renewable energy
It will need to be supplied between January 1, 2026 for a period of 15 years
Power generated will power its business operations and 3rd parties that it works with
The National Copper Corporation of Chile (Codelco) has invited national and international bidders under a new call to seek 1,500 GWh/year of renewable energy capacity as it pursues its decarbonization strategy.
The renewable energy supply period for the winners will be 15 years, starting from January 1, 2026 till December 31, 2040. It will cover the electricity demand for the company’s various business operations as well as those of the 3rd parties that provide service to Codelco.
Interested bidders have time till July 19, 2024 to express their interest in participating in this round launched on July 8, 2024. Details are available on Codelco’s website.
Its decision to procure 1,500 GWh/year of renewable energy follows the recent modification of a coal-based energy contract. In May 2024, Codelco modified its 2007 electricity purchase agreement with a subsidiary of France’s Engie for 1,000 GWh/year. This coal-based power supply contract was replaced with renewable energy.
The company targets to power all its operations from renewable energy sources by the end of 2030. In March 2024, Codelco contracted Atlas Renewable Energy, Innergex Renewable Energy and Colbún for 1.8 TW/year of clean energy supply, also starting from January 1, 2026. This contract will cover over 85% of its electricity use to come from renewables (see Chile’s Largest Copper Producer Contracts Renewable Energy).
