PT PLN has launched a 1.225 GW solar project under the new GIGA ONE scheme in Indonesia
The scheme is a bundled procurement model through which it aims to improve efficiency, scale, and investor confidence
Projects are set for completion by 2029 across multiple Indonesian regions
Indonesian state-owned electric utility PT PLN (Persero) has launched the Mentari Nusantara I solar power project, a 1.225 GW initiative aimed at accelerating the deployment of renewable energy in the country. It will support Indonesia in achieving its net-zero emissions target by 2060 or earlier.
The tender process began on April 30, 2026, under a new integrated procurement scheme called GIGA ONE. According to PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo, the GIGA ONE model consolidates multiple projects into a single package. This allows for economies of scale, improved project bankability, and greater certainty for investors.
“Through the GIGA ONE bundling strategy, PLN is positioning renewable energy as a driver of national industrial growth. This isn't just about building power plants, but rather developing an integrated clean energy industrial ecosystem from upstream to downstream,” added PLN’s Director of Project Management and New and Renewable Energy Suroso Isnandar.
The initiative also aims to strengthen domestic manufacturing, increase local content, and support the development of a broader clean energy ecosystem.
The solar capacity will be distributed across several regions, including Sumatra (35 MW), Kalimantan (340 MW), Java (600 MW), Sulawesi (50 MW), West Nusa Tenggara (80 MW), and Maluku and Papua (120 MW) regions, with all projects targeted for commercial operation by 2029. Suroso called the GIGA ONE model a ‘new blueprint’ for renewable energy procurement in Indonesia. It could be extended to other technologies such as hydropower, wind energy, and battery storage as part of Indonesia’s wider energy transition strategy.
