Key Takeaways
  • IRENA is seeking renewable energy project proposals from Central America and the Caribbean

  • It says selected projects will receive support to improve investment and implementation readiness

  • The submission window for proposals for eligible projects is open until September 1, 2026

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) has launched a new call for renewable energy project proposals from countries in Central America and the Caribbean.

The initiative, explains IRENA, is intended to support ongoing efforts to expand renewable energy deployment and attract investment as part of efforts to advance the region's clean energy transition.

According to the agency, the call is open to renewable energy projects from eligible countries, namely Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Grenada, Honduras, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago.

Eligible projects include renewable energy generation (on-grid, off-grid, centralized or decentralized distribution), supporting infrastructure, e-mobility, green industrialization and renewable energy supply chains. The call covers technologies such as solar PV, solar thermal, onshore and offshore wind, hydropower, geothermal, bioenergy, clean transportation, green hydrogen and sargassum-to-energy.

Project developers from both public and private sectors can submit proposals to this call.

Selected proposals can secure financing, investment partnerships, and de-risking instruments to speed up their implementation.

Winning facilities may be considered for funding through IRENA’s Climate Investment Platform (CIP) and Energy Transition Accelerator Financing (ETAF) platform.

For CIP, the eligible facilities must be developed beyond the conceptual stage and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and national climate action priorities.

It will consider medium-to-large-scale projects for ETAF support with capital expenditure requirements of at least $25 million for private or Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and $10 million for public sector facilities. Such facilities must have completed pre-feasibility or preliminary studies.

ETAF connects investment-ready renewable energy projects with financing opportunities through a network of 15 global financing and risk-mitigation partners that have committed a combined $4 billion.

“This initiative aims to support the ongoing efforts of Central American and Caribbean countries to decarbonise their economies and scale up the use of renewable energy, while ensuring a just energy transition,” explained IRENA.

The deadline for project submissions for CIP and ETAF support is September 1, 2026.
