Maldives has launched a competitive solicitation process for a large-scale solar project
It is proposed to host 100 MW to 150 MW of solar PV capacity, along with battery storage
Interested companies can send in their response to the EOI round by February 27, 2025
The Ministry of Finance and Planning in Maldives has invited interested companies to explore the opportunity of building a solar PV plant with an installed capacity of 100 MW to 150 MW in the country.
The project will be located in the Greater Malé region, accompanied by a battery storage component. It will balance solar PV supply and demand within the grid, explained the ministry. The project will contribute to grid-generated electricity.
The broad scope of work for the project includes design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of the facility post-completion. The project will need to be constructed on a design, build, finance, own, operate and transfer (DBFOOT) basis.
Applications in response to this request for expression of interest (EOI) will be accepted till February 27, 2025, according to the call published on the ministry’s website on February 9, 2025.
According to the country’s 2024-2030 roadmap for the energy sector, Maldives had an installed electricity generation capacity of 600 MW as of July 2024, with 68.5 MW from solar PV. This technology represented close to 6% of all of the country’s power consumption. The Greater Malé region had 10 MW PV installed along with 140 MW based on diesel generation.
By 2028, the island nation targets renewable energy to have a 33% share in its total consumption translating into over 800 GWh, requiring around 330 MW of additional capacity.
