Key Takeaways
  • Poland has launched round 6 of its Mój Prąd program to boost small-scale energy installations

  • For solar PV facilities installed from August 1, 2024, energy storage systems have been made mandatory

  • Funding for these systems will come from the FEnIKS program of the European Union

The Ministry of Climate and Environment in Poland has opened round 6 of the country’s prosumer funding scheme with a budget of PLN 400 million ($104 million). It is open to applications for small-scale or micro solar PV installations, electricity storage, and heat storage systems.

Under the My Electricity or Mój Prąd 6.0 program, net-billing consumers that installed micro solar PV systems since January 1, 2021, are eligible to apply for state funding. Solar PV systems, with capacity ranging from 2 kW to 20 kW, grid-connected since August 1, 2024, are mandated to install an energy storage system or heat storage to avail of the funds. A 2 kW PV system must be accompanied by at least a 2 kWh storage system.

Funding is available for thermal energy storage systems up to PLN 5,000 ($1,300), and for electrical energy storage systems up to PLN 16,000 ($4,156).

The total capacity of all renewable energy source installations owned by a prosumer, including the photovoltaic micro-installation and energy storage, may not exceed 50 kW, according to the rules.

Up to 50% of the eligible investment costs for PV installations, energy storage and heat storage will be covered under the subsidy scheme. For only solar PV installations, a subsidy of up to PLN 6,000 ($1,558) is available, and it increases to PLN 7,000 ($1,818) for solar-plus-storage deployments.

The ambit of micro solar PV installations covers solar roofs, solar canopies, solar carports, balcony PV, but all need to be grid-connected.

Funds will be distributed by the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management with finance coming from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment (FEnIKS) program.

“The launch of the next edition of this program is the ministry's response to the continuing interest in one's own energy source. This is another step on the way to decarbonization and the development of prosumer energy in Poland,” said Poland’s Minister of Climate and Environment, Paulina Hennig-Kloska.

Applications to this round will be accepted between September 2, 2024 and December 20, 2024, or until funds are exhausted. Details of the latest round are available on a dedicated website.

In the last 5 Mój Prąd rounds, the government says it has allocated a total of PLN 2.96 billion ($769 million) to co-finance prosumer investments. Of this, the fund has already paid more than PLN 2.6 billion ($675 million) to 526,000 prosumers.

At the end of 2023, Poland had installed more than 17 GW of cumulative PV capacity, including the addition of around 5 GW last year (see Poland’s Cumulative Installed Solar PV Capacity Exceeds 17 GW).
