Key Takeaways
  • Romania is inviting renewable energy companies to bid for state support under its maiden CfD auction round

  • It will support the installation of 1 GW onshore wind, and 500 MW solar PV capacity

  • Tariffs for both the technologies are capped at €82/MWh, and 78/MWh, respectively

Romania’s Ministry of Energy has officially launched the country’s 1st renewable energy auction, inviting bids for 1 GW onshore wind and 500 MW solar energy capacity under the contracts for difference (CfD) scheme.

For wind energy, the ceiling price is capped at €82 ($90.4)/MWh, while for solar it is set at €78 ($86)/MWh. Winning projects will win energy supply contracts for a period of 15 years for the tariff determined in the auction. Solar PV capacity for this round was lowered by 500 MW (see Romania Lowers Solar PV Capacity Allocation For CfD Auction Round 1).

“I invite as many investors as possible to participate in this auction and contribute to the transformation of the energy sector in Romania. The more bidders we have, the more we will be able to accelerate the change needed to increase renewable energy production capacity at a competitive cost,” said the Romanian Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.

He added, “I remind you that Romania is the first country that succeeded in financing the CfD scheme from the Modernization Fund, obtaining an amount of €3 billion for this purpose.”

The call was issued on September 9, 2024. Funding requests will be accepted till November 18, 2024.

Contracts with the winners of this round are expected to be signed by the end of 2024. It will be followed by a 2nd auction for a total capacity of 3.5 GW onshore wind and solar PV in 2025.

This much delayed auction round is part of Romania plans to fund 5 GW of renewable energy capacity through CfD auctions (see Romania Releases CfD Auction Schedule For 5 GW).
