The Ministry of Energy in Romania plans to award financial support for low carbon power generation technologies through a contracts for difference (CfD) mechanism and has opened an expression of interest (EOI) round for interested parties willing to enter the auctions.
Under its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), Romania has committed to meet targets to achieve 30.7% renewable energy in the country's national energy mix for gross final energy consumption by 2030. The CfD mechanism is an effort in that direction, to encourage investments in low carbon technologies.
"We therefore recognize both the scale of investment that these ambitious targets require, and the value that a CfD scheme can deliver in helping the industry and government meet these targets," it stated.
The 1st CfD auction is scheduled to be launched in Q1/2023, according to the ministry. The support scheme will be implemented with support from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) along with a consortium of consultants including the CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang and Nera Economic Consulting.
The EOI opened on December 7, 2022 on the Energy Ministry's website. Interested companies can submit their EOIs by by December 30, 2022.
In March 2022, the ministry had been seeking eligible wind and solar energy facilities with up to 950 MW combined capacity to award €457.7 million state funding (see Romania's 950 MW Renewables Tender).
