Key Takeaways
  • Somalia has launched a competitive tender for a hybrid solar and storage project

  • It will have 55 MW AC of solar PV and 160 MWh of BESS capacity, to be located in Mogadishu for Beco

  • The proceeds from the World Bank towards Somalia Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation Project will fund the PV project

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources in Somalia has invited eligible bidders to build a hybrid 55 MW AC solar PV project with 160 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity.

This facility, to be grid-connected to the country’s largest electricity supplier Beco, is planned to be located at Jazeera Power Plant in Mogadishu.

The broad scope of work involves the design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the hybrid project. It needs to be delivered within 15 to 18 months from the effective date.

Somalia says it will fund the project contract payments using part of the proceeds it received from the World Bank towards the cost of the Somalia Accelerating Sustainable and Clean Energy Access Transformation Project.

The invitation for bids was launched on January 30, 2025 on the World Bank website. Bid submissions will be accepted till April 14, 2025.

Somalia has one of the lowest electrification rates in Africa at 17%, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) says Somalia had only 49 MW of renewable energy capacity installed at the end of 2023, including 46 MW of solar PV.
