Spain’s MITECO has launched an expression of interest via the Institute for Just Transition
The initiative seeks to shape future grid capacity allocation mechanisms for renewable energy and storage projects
Proposed nodes are located in multiple just transition regions affected by the closure of coal and nuclear power plants
The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) in Spain has launched an expression of interest (EoI) to assess developer interest in renewable energy and storage projects, linked to just transition grid nodes.
Launched through the Institute for Just Transition, the initiative aims to help the ministry design future mechanisms for allocating grid capacity at these locations.
Under Spain’s Just Transition Strategy 2026–2030, the government plans to prioritize renewable energy projects that promise socio-environmental benefits, at the grid nodes affected by the closure of coal and nuclear power plants.
The proposed grid hubs are located across just transition areas in A Coruña, Almería, Asturias, Burgos, Cádiz, Ciudad Real, León and Palencia. The call is open to technically and environmentally viable projects.
“The aim is to design the most appropriate access capacity granting mechanisms for each node, maximizing local socio-economic benefit with minimal environmental impact,” explained the ministry.
Interested parties are invited to submit details on project technology, readiness, environmental considerations, and potential local socio-economic benefits by June 15, 2026. Details are available here.
