Key Takeaways
  • Tajikistan has launched a 200 MW solar power tender in the Sughd region

  • It is to come up near the country’s border with Uzbekistan where several PV plants are currently coming up

  • It is part of the country’s plans to develop over 1 GW of solar PV capacity by 2030

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MEWR) in Tajikistan has launched a tender seeking bidders for a 200 MW solar power plant that’s planned to be located in the Sughd region, near the administrative boundary between Mastchokh and B. Gafurov districts.

Its location is close to the Uzbekistan border where several solar PV projects are either under construction or in the planning stage, it said. The closest is the 263 MW Buka PV plant to be developed by China Datang Overseas Investment.

The winner will sign a power purchase agreement (PPA) with the country’s state-owned electricity market operator OJSC Barqi Tojik. The broad scope of work will be design, build, finance, operate and maintain the 200 MW project.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is the strategic advisor for the project.

The tender for the pre-qualification round was launched on October 18, 2024 with November 12, 2024 as the date to submit applications.

Tajikistan aims to add over 1 GW of solar PV capacity by 2030, in addition to existing renewable energy sources. This 200 MW tender for solar power plant and ancillary technology is part of this expansion plan.

Recently, China’s EGing PV signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Tajikistan Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to build a 200 MW solar power plant worth $150 million in the Panj Free Economic Zone (see Chinese Manufacturer Unveils Solar Plans For Tajikistan).
