Transport For London’s RE PPA Tender

• TfL in London has launched a tender to procure renewable energy under a PPA
• Under phase I of the tender, TfL expects to purchase close to 10% of its required electricity from renewables as wind and solar
• The solicitation is also aimed at supporting the development of new renewable energy assets

The Mayor of the city of London in the UK, Sadiq Khan has announced the city's Tube network run by Transport for London (TFL) is soliciting bids to sign a renewables power purchase agreement (PPA) as the latter aims to power all of its operations with 100% renewable energy by 2030.

Khan shared that the 1^st tender aims to purchase close to 10% of TfL's required electricity from renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power, thereby supporting the construction of new projects. Currently TfL's annual electricity requirement adds up to 1.6 TWh.

The Mayor's office added that TfL's large demand for renewable source electricity will help increase demand for new solar and wind generation in the UK, eventually leading to creation of new green jobs.

"By confirming the demand for renewable energy, the PPA will also lead to the creation of new build assets across the UK, such as solar or wind generation, by enabling the selected supplier to confidently invest in the delivery of new renewable energy sources. This in turn supports the wider UK economy, as well as the country's green recovery, by creating green jobs in both construction and operation," stated the administration.

On the occasion, Khan also shared that London is now a signatory to the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty under which it will phase out fossil fuels production, and transition to clean energy. London has already committed to become a zero carbon city by 2030.
