Key Takeaways
  • Tunisia’s Energy Ministry has invited bidders for a 200 MW AC solar PV tender

  • The capacity needs to be installed in the form of 2 solar projects with 100 MW AC capacity each

  • The winners will be required to install and grid connect the projects on completion

Tunisia’s Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy has invited bids for 200 MW AC of solar PV capacity development, to be installed as 2 separate projects with 100 MW AC individual capacity each.

The call does not specify the location of these projects, but that the ministry will select 2 solar PV power generation projects to supply clean electricity to the grid.

The ministry launched the tender on January 13, 2025. It will accept bids till April 30, 2025. Details are available on its website

In October 2024, the ministry launched a PV tender for 200 MW solar PV capacity with January 31, 2025 as the last date for bid submission (see Tunisia Launches 200 MW Solar Energy Tender).

Tunisia’s renewable energy target comprises achieving a 30% share in the electricity mix by 2030, translating into 3.8 GW of renewable energy capacity. As of 2023, the country had installed 506 MW of solar PV capacity, according to the Solar Outlook Report 2025 of the Middle East Solar Industry Association (MESIA). It is also introducing solar energy licensing reforms to speed up renewable energy adoption. Solar energy auctions are part of this plan.

Economic hardships among citizens and industries, along with financially-strained national utility Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG), are among the challenges the country faces in accelerating the pace of renewable energy adoption.
