Tunisia has launched two separate tenders for a 50 MW AC solar plant with battery system, and a tender for 300 MW/600 MWh of BESS across 10 sites
The multi-site storage tender covers northern, central, and southern Tunisia, while the solar project includes grid connection infrastructure
For the solar and storage project, the bid deadline is December 10, 2026, while for the standalone storage tender it is October 29, 2026
Tunisia’s state-owned utility Société Tunisienne de l’Électricité et du Gaz (STEG) has launched two international tenders for solar power and battery energy storage projects. These cover a 50 MW AC solar plant with 20 MWh of storage and a separate 300 MW/600 MWh battery storage deployment across 10 sites.
The first tender covers the construction of a 50 MW AC solar power plant in Beni Mhira, Tataouine Governorate, along with a 10 MW/20 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
The project is financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It includes a solar PV plant, BESS, a 33/225 kV substation, and approximately 1.2 km of 225 kV transmission line connecting it to the national grid.
The contract covers the design, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the facilities, along with staff training and maintenance during the warranty period. It is scheduled for completion within 18 months.
Eligible bidders must be ISO-9001-certified EPC contractors with sufficient technical and financial qualifications.
STEG launched the call on October 12, 2026. It will accept bids till December 10, 2026. Details are also available on EBRD’s website.
The second tender covers the deployment of 300 MW/600 MWh of BESS across 10 sites at medium-voltage substations in northern, central, and southern Tunisia. The call requires the systems to meet international standards for performance, safety, and cybersecurity.
The deployment is divided into the following three lots:
Lot 1: Northern Region: Site 1 - Ben Arous (15MW/30MWh), site 2 - Gaafour (37.5MW/75MWh), site 3 - Mateur (15MW/30MWh), and site 4 - Kchabta (37.5MW/75MWh)
Lot 2: Central Region: Site 5-Msaken (30MW/60MWh), site 6-Ksour Essef (30MW/60MWh), and site 7-BirLahfey (30MW/60MWh)
Lot 3: Southern Region: Site 8-Gabes South (30MW/60MWh), site 9-Medenine (37.5MW/75MWh), and site 10-Midoun (37.5MW/75MWh)
Interested bidders will be required to design, supply, install, commission, and maintain the battery systems.
The bid submission deadline for the BESS tender is October 29, 2026. STEG issued the call at the end of September 2026.
Earlier this year, in March 2026, Tunisia’s Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies invited bids for a 300 MW solar power plant integrated with 150 MW/540 MWh BESS (see Tunisia Launches 300 MW Solar & 150 MW Battery Storage Tender).
In July 2026, the Tunisian government reportedly approved five utility-scale solar power projects totaling 500 MW, aiming to increase solar's share of the electricity mix to around 14% by 2027. The approval aligns with Tunisia’s target of 30% renewable energy generation by 2030.
