Turkey’s Solar Capacity Exceeds 7.6 GW

992 MW New Solar Capacity Installed By Turkey During 10M/2021

Turkey’s Solar Capacity Exceeds 7.6 GW

TEIAS numbers for the Turkey's total installed solar energy capacity show the country had 7.659 GW deployed till October 2021, up from 7.065 GW till April 2021.

  • Turkey installed 992 MW solar PV capacity between January 2021 and October 2021
  • It includes 125 MW added in October 2021 alone, out of 198 MW total power generation capacity added
  • Cumulative installed power generation mix of Turkey at the end of October 2021 was 99.05 GW, out of which 7.659 GW came from solar

Between January 2021 and October 2021, Turkey added 992 MW new solar PV capacity taking the cumulative installed to 7.659 GW. The total power generation capacity of the country reached 99.05 GW, reported Turkish Electricity Transmission Corporation (TEIAS).

Referring to TEIAS statistics, local solar energy news portal Solarist says in October 2021, 125 MW solar capacity was installed out of 198 MW installed for all power sources. In the first 4 months of the year, 398 MW of solar was installed (see Turkey’s Installed Solar Power Capacity Exceeds 7 GW).

Of the total installed power generation capacity of the country till October 2021, wind energy contributed 10.25 GW and lignite power plants added 10.12 GW, followed by 8.99 GW of imported coal-fired power plants, among others. Natural gas power plants made the bulk of it with 25.53 GW.

Turkey aims to install 15 GW of solar PV capacity till 2027, but the way things are going market intelligence firm GlobalData expects the country to achieve the target by 2026, just as it achieved the 5 GW by 2023 target ahead of schedule in 2018 (see Turkey Close To 50 GW RE Capacity By 2030).

While the government aims to continue supporting coal, nuclear and gas powered projects, it plans to launch renewable energy auctions for 2 GW solar and wind capacity each in 2021 (see 2 GW Solar Power To Be Auctioned In 2021 In Turkey).
