Virtual Energy Transmission

Fluence Energy Creates Battery Based Energy Storage Solution Through Virtual Transmission Line, Super-Fast Responsive System

Quick is key: Fluence Energy developed a super quick grid booster solution that takes only 87 ms to complete a processing cycle and only 70 ms to convert from charging to generation mode (Source: Fluence)
  • Fluence energy, a global energy storage technology and services provider, uses battery based energy storage system in the transmission network
  • The grid booster storage system also called as virtual transmission line take only 87 ms to process and 70 ms to convert from charging to generation mode
  • Efficient use of this transmission systems helps in energy independence, decarbonatization and less dependent on fossil fuels

Fluence Energy, a Siemens and AES joint venture, focuses on creating energy storage products and services as well as digital applications for renewables and storage. It is among the three companies that won the smarter E Award for outstanding project. In operation since 2021, a Fluence pilot project in Vilnius, Lithuania, is one of the first in the world to use a battery-based energy storage system in the transmission network and acquired by a transmission network operator.

The key features are that the grid booster storage system is quick to react, taking only 87 ms to complete a processing cycle and only 70 ms to convert from charging to generation mode. This sort of grid booster, also known as a virtual transmission line, allows operators to make more efficient use of the existing cable infrastructure by spreading out electricity delivery. By using this technology to power the grid, Lithuania and other regions can gradually reduce their reliance on fossil fuels and move toward greater energy independence and decarbonization.

The judges applauded the forward-thinking concept of increasing system capacity with batteries, which will grow in significance as the use of renewable energy sources becomes more widespread.
