Wemag Commissions 165 MW Solar In Germany

Wemag, the German electricity utility, has commissioned solar power capacity of 165 MW on 7 locations in the country's Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania region. One of the 2 investors in Project Balder is the Evangelical Church in Württemberg.

The largest single project out of the 7 locations is 82.6 MW Zietlitz that's come up on gravel pit along the motorway. The investors called it the lighthouse project that can help avoid around 40,000 tons of CO2. Wemag called it 'currently the largest tender in the solar sector in Germany' funded under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG).

"Not only has a power station been built on the pebbled areas, which helps to reduce CO2 emissions, but wetlands have also been created, which also serve as fire ponds and habitats for small creatures and birds," said Head of Finance at the Evangelical Church, Dr. Martin Kastrup.

Project Balder is equipped with around 500,000 solar modules, designed to feed around 150,000 MWh into the public grid annually. It is Wemag's largest project to date whose planning and construction period spanned around 2 years.
