  • SPNEC has begun constructing what it believes is the world’s largest solar power plant
  • Phase I of the project is scheduled to be commissioned by Q1/2026 in the Nueva Ecija and Bulacan region of the Philippines
  • SPNEC has also announced leadership change with Meralco Chairman taking over as the company’s new Chairman, President and CEO

Solar Philippines Nueva Ecija Corporation (SPNEC), the publicly listed vehicle of Solar Philippines, has started the construction of the Terra Solar project in the Philippines. The project aims to install 3.5 GW of solar panels on-site along with 4 GWh of battery storage capacity.

It has started clearing close to 3,500 hectares of land in the Nueva Ecija and Bulacan region to host the project, which will see the company installing more than 5 million panels. The 3.5 GW solar and storage project is estimated to cost PHP 200 billion ($3.6 million).

Phase I of the project is scheduled to enter commercial operations by Q1/2026, according to a company statement.

SPNEC had previously announced a 500 MW solar power plant in the same area (see SPNEC Working On 4 GW Solar Farm In Philippines).

In related news from the company, SPNEC’s Chairman, President and CEO Leandro Antonio L. Leviste has been appointed as its Vice Chairman, leaving the top job of the group to be taken over by Filipino businessman Manuel V. Pangilinan from December 27, 2023.

The change followed Manila Electric Company (Meralco) acquiring a controlling stake in SPNEC through its subsidiary MGen Renewable Energy. Pangilinan is the chairman of Meralco.
