Egypt is considering Kibing Solar’s plans to establish a solar glass factory in the country
It will have an annual production capacity of 1.53 million tons of solar PV glass and 1.08 million tons of high-purity silica sand
The company plans to realize this project in 2 phases with a total investment of $700 million
Chinese solar glass manufacturer Kibing Solar New Energy plans to establish a new manufacturing facility in Egypt to produce solar glass for PV panels worth $700 million, according to the State Information Service (SIS) of Egypt.
The new factory is proposed to be located in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) with an annual production capacity of 1.53 million tons of solar PV glass and 1.08 million tons of high-purity silica sand, according to the SIS.
The Chinese company is now reportedly seeking the government’s support to implement the project in 2 phases. According to the government statement, Egyptian Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly has instructed the Ministry of Electricity and Petroleum to ensure necessary supplies for the project, including electricity.
Egypt is becoming a hotspot for Chinese solar PV manufacturers that seek to serve the broader African and Middle East markets from this location. Recently, JA Solar unveiled plans to establish 2 GW each of solar cell and module capacity in Egypt, while EliTe Solar is working on an 8 GW PV manufacturing hub (see JA Solar Headed To Egypt For 4 GW Solar Cell & Module Production).
Corrigendum: The article previously incorrectly mentioned that Xinyi Solar Glass had announced plans for its Egypt solar glass manufacturing factory owing to a translation error. However, Egypt’s State Information Service specifies the company name as Kibing Solar from China, a link to which has been added. The error is regretted.
