JA Solar plans to establish 2 GW each of solar cell and module manufacturing capacity in Egypt
It has signed an MoU with Global South Utilities of the UAE to explore the feasibility of such an investment
They plan to use locally sourced materials such as glass and aluminum for the proposed factories
Chinese solar PV manufacturer JA Solar is expanding its geographic footprint in Africa with plans to establish 2 solar PV manufacturing facilities in Egypt, one for cells and the other for panels with 2 GW production capacity each.
The company will collaborate with UAE-based Global South Utilities under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between them.
According to local media reports, the duo plans to carry out feasibility studies on the proposed development, and secure government incentives. JA Solar will oversee the study phase with $138 million planned for the solar cell, and $75 million for the panel manufacturing facilities. They aim to use locally sourced materials such as glass, and aluminum.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, in whose presence the MoU was signed, said that this MoU aligns with the country’s Sustainable Energy Strategy 2035 to transition to a green energy system with renewables accounting for 42% of its electricity by 2030.
The country has been attracting solar PV investors from across the globe of late, including Singapore’s EliTe Solar which has announced plans for an 8 GW PV manufacturing hub in Egypt (see EliTe Solar Unveils 8 GW Solar PV Manufacturing Plans For Egypt).
JA Solar spokesperson confirmed this development with TaiyangNews and shared, “JA Solar has been actively exploring global production capacity layout. The signing of the MOU for the Egypt project is a preliminary intention reached by our collaborative partners and various signing parties. We will further explore the specific construction scale and equity ratios of the project, leverage the advantages of all parties, and promote the implementation of the project.”
Overseas markets bring in a significant chunk of the Chinese manufacturer’s revenues as it shared in its H1 2024 financial report. Apart from China, the US and Europe, JA is also rapidly expanding its offerings to other international markets including the Middle East and Africa (see Overseas Markets Led JA Solar’s H1 2024 Module Shipments).
