  • Solar PV technology generated 37.3% more clean electricity on the Spanish grid between 9M/2022 on annual basis
  • With 21,001 GWh generated, it surpassed all of 20,954 GWh produced in all of 2021
  • It now accounts for 14.6% of all installed power generation capacity in the country, followed by hydro power at 14.8%

Spanish electricity grid operator Red Electrica de Espana (REE) says solar PV power generation is breaking its own records in the country as it produced 37.3% more electricity between January 2022 till September 2022 beginning compared to the same period in 2021, with cumulative installed capacity having reached 16.987 GW.

As per a statement released on September 6, 2022 by the REE, in absolute numbers so far solar power production in Spain has reached 21,001 GWh, surpassing all of 20,954 GWh it generated in 2021.

At the end of 2021, Spain's cumulative installed solar PV capacity was 15.048 GW which would mean it has grown by over 1.94 GW from then on. The country added 3.3 GW in the entire last year (see Over 3.3 GW New Solar In Spain In 2021). With 16.987 GW, it now accounts for 14.6% of all power generation capacity, followed by hydro power at 14.8%.

Before the end of 2022, it now expects solar PV to surpass hydro to become the 3rd largest technology in terms of installed power capacity in Spain.

"Solar photovoltaic energy is undoubtedly one of the major players in the growth made by renewables in Spain. In 2021, this technology was noteworthy as being the one that increased the most in terms of both production and installed power capacity," stated REE.

Not just Spain, solar power is growing across all of Europe as a recent Ember report found out. Between just May 2022 and August 2022, the European Union (EU) generated a record 12% of electricity from solar power, up from 9% annually reaching 12% share in the region's power mix (see Solar Power Bringing Down EU's Gas Import Bill).
