Alishan Offers Dual Fluoropolymer Backsheet Lines With PET-Based Structures

ABS-KPC and ABS-CPC differ in outer lamination and coating construction, but share core performance specs

Backsheets are the rear cover of the module that protects the cell matrix circuit from environmental impacts, which makes them the backbone of module reliability. While there are several variants of backsheets, they can be largely categorized into fluoropolymer and non-fluoropolymer

The fluoropolymer section of the survey features about 37 products from 8 suppliers in detail. The products include fluoropolymer-based backsheets that contain fluorine in at least one layer, as well as coating-based backsheets using fluorine.

Alishan, an India-based supplier of backsheets and encapsulants, participates for the first time in the TaiyangNews Backsheets and Encapsulation Market Survey with fluoropolymer-based products. The company officially entered the backsheet business in 2019 and launched its first products in 2020. It offers a range of backsheet products in both fluoropolymer and non-fluoropolymer streams. Within the fluoropolymer section, the company has provided data for 2 product lines – ABS-KPC and ABS-CPC – both available in white and black variants. Transparent versions of these products are also on offer, identifiable by the ‘T’ suffixed in the model name. While both of these backsheet product lines have a 5 µm inner fluoro coating on the cell side, the rest of their construction varies. ABS-KPC is laminated with a 25 µm PVDF on the air side and a 275 µm PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) in the middle (see Polyolefin-Based Encapsulants From Alishan Green Energy).

The coating-based backsheet ABS-CPC features a 288 µm PET and a 12 µm outer coating. Both backsheets that are available in the market from 2023 are up to 305 µm thick and up to 1,305 mm wide. They feature an elongation of 100% and 90% in the MD and TD directions, respectively, whereas the tensile strength is the same in both directions, at 100 MPa. Both demonstrate an EVA peel strength greater than 6 N/mm, a breakdown voltage of 32 kV, and partial discharge resistance exceeding 1,500 V DC. The water vapor permeability is less than 2.2 g/m²/d.
