  • Alishan’s ABS-PPC backsheet features a 310 µm multilayer construction using HPET and PET, likely with fluorine-based coatings

  • It supports 1,500 V DC systems, with a breakdown voltage above 20 kV and WVTR < 2 g/m²/d

  • Mechanical specs include 100 MPa tensile strength, ≥4 N/mm tear strength, and elongation ≥100% (MD), ≥90% (TD)

Non-fluoropolymer-based backsheets are gaining increased attention, driven by innovation and the growing number of companies entering this segment. Traditionally regarded as suitable only for mild weather conditions with low UV and moisture exposure, suppliers are now challenging this notion by promoting their products as effective in all weather conditions. Many non-fluoropolymer backsheet manufacturers emphasize that their products provide comparable weathering protection to fluoropolymer alternatives while often being more cost-effective. The recent price increase of PVDF has further boosted the adoption of non-fluoropolymer options in the market.

Among non-fluoropolymer solutions, backsheets with UV-stable PET remain the most widely used. Coveme initially led this segment with its PET-based solutions, but numerous companies have since introduced halogen-free alternatives, expanding the market. The non-fluoropolymer backsheet segment has grown significantly, increasing from 39 products to 58 products and from 7 suppliers to 11 suppliers.

A new entrant to the survey, Alishan has provided data for 1 non-fluoropolymer product. The ABS-PPC backsheet, introduced in 2023, has a total effective thickness of 310 μm with layers of HPET, adhesive, PET, and fluoropolymer. While the company has not specified the chemistry of the fluoropolymer, it is most likely based on coatings. Measuring 1,305 mm in width and weighing 420 ± 5% g/m², this backsheet is available in white, black, or transparent versions.

This backsheet’s mechanical features include a tensile strength of 100 MPa and a tear strength of ≥4 N/mm in both MD and TD directions, while its elongation rate is ≥100% in MD and ≥90% in TD. With a dimensional stability of 80 N/mm, this backsheet, named ABS-PPC, boasts a breakdown voltage exceeding 20 kV, a 1,500 V DC partial discharge rating, and low water vapor permeability of <2 g/m²/d.
