  • Somalia’s energy ministry has launched a solar PV and energy storage tender

  • It will install 12 MW of PV and 36 MWh of BESS capacity in the Berbera region

  • Part of the World Bank proceeds for the SESRP project will be used for this project

The Ministry of Energy and Minerals in Somalia has opened a tender for the installation of a 12 MW solar PV project with a 36 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).

The broad scope of work for the selected EPC contractors is design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of this capacity. The winner will also be required to set up a 13.5 km 33 kV evacuation line in Berbera.

It is to be installed under the World Bank-backed Somali Electricity Sector Recovery Project (SESRP) that aims to increase access to lower cost and cleaner electricity supply. The government plans to cover the cost of the solar and storage tender from the World Bank financing for SESRP using Direct Payment Disbursement method.

The winner will be required to complete the project implementation within the contract period of 15 months.

The ministry will hold a pre-bid conference for interested bidders on April 5, 2025, and accept bids until May 5, 2025. The details of the tender are shared by a local website.

This tender follows a 55 MW solar PV and 160 MWh of BESS tender launched by the Energy Ministry to be located in Mogadishu (see Somalia Launches 55 MW AC Solar & Energy Storage Tender).
