Suriname Wants Sustainable Energy Strategy

South American Nation Seeking Consultants To Design Country’s 1st Renewable Energy Auction

State-owned electricity utility of Suriname, NV Energiebedrijven Suriname (EBS) is seeking consultants to help develop the country's 1st utility scale renewable energy auction, backed by proceeds from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).  

Selected consulting firm will be required to help design the tenders for solar, wind and biomass energy technologies. Role includes defining the roles and responsibilities of main stakeholders, laying down interconnection rules, awarding methodology and contractual agreements.  

Broad scope of work includes preparing a draft request for proposals (RFP) and power purchase agreement (PPA) for the tenders. Work will also span strengthening the capacity of the utility and Energy Authority of Suriname to empower them with designing and implementing renewable energy auctions.   

Interested firm needs to have a minimum of 5 years of experience working on international projects, including experience in designing and running successful renewable energy auctions with regional experience in Small Island Development States and the Caribbean.  

The IDB is supporting Suriname for the cost of Consolidating a sustainable energy sector. EBS said it intends to use part of these proceeds towards payments for the consultation services.    

The tender was launched on July 24, 2023. The last date for interested consulting firms to submit their applications is August 11, 2023, as per the expression of interest (EOI) call.  

A year back, EBS inaugurated a 300 kW solar and 250 kWh storage project of SUMEC Group Corporation, selected under a public tender (see Latin America PV News Snippets).
