TP Solar has commissioned its 4.3 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant in India
The factory is located in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli as the country’s ‘largest’ single-location PV factory
It will initially cater to Tata Power’s ongoing projects; later, the company plans to explore opportunities for wider market distribution
India’s Tata Power has officially inaugurated its 4.3 GW solar cell and module manufacturing plant at Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, calling it India’s ‘largest’ single-location solar manufacturing facility.
The company, through its India solar manufacturing arm TP Solar Ltd, will produce high-efficiency TOPCon and mono PERC technology without specifying their individual contribution. Around 80% of the factory’s workforce consists of women.
It will meet India’s growing renewable energy demand, stated the company. The factory was inaugurated by Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister M.K. Stalin. The company had previously announced commissioning a 2 GW solar cell production line here in September 2024 (see Tata Power’s 2 GW Solar Cell Production Line Operational).
Initially TP Solar will roll out cells and modules for the company’s own ongoing projects to strengthen its supply chain. In the future, it will also explore opportunities for wider market distribution.

Tata Power already operates 682 MW of solar module and 530 MW of solar cell production capacity at its Bengaluru factory in Karnataka. It also plans to develop a 2 GW solar module manufacturing factory in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur (see India’s Tata Power To Invest INR 1.2 Trillion For RE in Rajasthan).
According to a recent Crisil Ratings report, India’s solar module manufacturing capacity at the end of March 2024 reached 60 GW, and cell capacity stood at 10 GW. By FY2027, it forecasts the country’s total cell manufacturing capacity to expand to up to 55 GW (see India Solar Cell Manufacturing Capacity To Exceed 50 GW By FY2027).
