Brazil’s new power generation capacity during H1 2024 totaled 7.8 GW, driven by renewable energy
90% of the new projects represented wind and solar PV projects out of the 219 that came online
In the month of September 2024, 491.83 MW of solar PV and 117.20 MW of wind energy capacity were energized
Between January and September this year, Brazil’s power generation capacity expansion totaled 7.8 GW with 219 projects coming online, 90% of which represented wind and solar PV plants, according to the country’s National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL).
In the month of September 2024, out of the 24 power plants that assumed commercial operations bringing online a combined 711.33 MW were 11 solar PV projects representing a combined 491.83 MW, 10 wind power plants that totaled 117.20 MW, and another 102.30 MW in the form of 3 thermoelectric plants.
As of October 1, 2024, Brazil’s total operational and under-construction power generation capacity exceeded 205.72 GW, and renewables accounted for 84.74% of this cumulative, according to ANEEL’s Generation Information System SIGA.
Solar PV’s share in the operational capacity is 7.53%, and 33.22% of the under-construction projects. However, a huge influx of this technology is expected as 84.22% of the projects that are yet to enter construction represent solar PV.
According to the Brazilian solar energy association ABSOLAR, Brazil’s cumulative operational solar PV capacity as of the end of August 2024 stood at 47.03 GW, comprising 15.086 GW of distributed and 31.94 GW of centralized generation projects.
The country also plans to launch new energy auctions for 2024 from December 2024 for selected projects to start commercial operations from 2028 and 2030 (see Brazil Planning New Energy Auctions In December 2024).
