The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) says with more than 2 GW of installed capacity each, wind and solar PV led Brazil's new power generation additions with a 87.6% share during 5M/2023, including 1.15 GW in the month of May alone.
While 17 wind energy projects added 363.9 MW to the matrix, 24 solar power plants represented 789.8 MW capacity in May 2023. Of the 1.267 GW brought online in the country in the reported month, 113.4 MW came from 4 thermoelectric projects.
Overall, the country installed 4.61 GW new power generation capacity till the end of May 2023. It comprises 62 wind energy projects with 2.0 GW combined capacity, 55 solar PV facilities with 2.03 GW capacity and 476.7 MW of 19 thermoelectric projects.
Remaining capacity came in the form of 82.1 MW small hydroelectric power plants, and 11.4 MW hydroelectric generating plants, according to Aneel.
In the initial 5 months of this year, Bahia was the top performing state having brought online 1.56 GW new capacity thanks to the commissioning if Complexo Futura (see Latin America PV News Snippets). It was followed by 1.12 GW in Minas Gerais, 798.9 MW in Rio Grande do Norte and 358.9 MW in Piaui.
Earlier Aneel had said Brazil installed 2.74 GW new power generation capacity in Q1/2023, including 1.48 GW wind and 920.2 MW solar PV (see Brazil: 2.7 GW Power Generation Capacity In Q1/2023).
