Canadian Solar Opens 6 GW HJT Cell Plant In Indiana

CS PowerTech, a subsidiary of Canadian Solar, has inaugurated Phase I of its solar cell manufacturing facility in Jeffersonville, Indiana. This marks the start of production at what the company says is the first US factory designed to manufacture heterojunction (HJT) bifacial n-type solar cells. 

Located at the River Ridge Commerce Center, Canadian Solar said the facility is intended to strengthen domestic solar manufacturing and expand the company's vertically integrated US supply chain. Trial production on site started in April 2026 with 2.1 GW nameplate capacity (see Canadian Solar Q1 2026 Revenue Reaches $1.1 Billion). 

The company said production will gradually ramp up to the full capacity of the first phase over the coming months. It also plans to begin work on a second expansion phase before the end of the year. 

Once fully operational, the Jeffersonville facility is expected to produce more than 6 GW of solar cells annually, and represent nearly $1 billion in local investment. It will create over 1,200 manufacturing, engineering, and technical jobs in Southern Indiana, 

The plant will complement CS PowerTech's module manufacturing operations in Mesquite, Texas, for which it targets 10 GW nameplate capacity by H2 2026. Its current operational capacity is 5 GW. 

Canadian Solar CEO Colin Parkin said, “HJT technology is critical for the next generation of high-efficiency, high-performance solar modules, and this plant gives CS PowerTech the ability to deliver leading technology, improved energy yield, and long-term value for customers while strengthening domestic advanced manufacturing.” 

Rusty Schmit, President of CS PowerTech, said the Jeffersonville plant is central to the company's strategy to build an advanced solar manufacturing supply chain in North America.
