China Exceeds 100 GW Solar Installations Mark In H1/2024

China has exceeded 100 GW of solar PV installations within H1/2024, taking the country’s total deployed capacity to over 713 GW, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA). The latter represents 51.6% annual growth. In 2023, it crossed the 100 GW mark in August showing the accelerated pace of PV installations in the world’s largest solar PV market.   

The 102.48 GW installed between January and June this year is an increase of 24.06 GW over the 78.42 GW the country reported for the same period in 2023 (see China PV News Snippets).  

Since it added 79.15 GW of new PV capacity within 5M/2024, it means China’s new additions during June 2024 exceeded 23 GW, making it the 1st month this year to have crossed 20 GW in monthly installations.  

During Q1 this year, its solar PV additions were around 15 GW/month, followed by 14.37 GW in April and 19.04 GW in the month of May (see China Installed Close To 80 GW New PV In 5M/2024).  

Earlier this year, the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) had forecast China to deploy 190 GW AC to 220 GW AC solar PV capacity in 2024, contributing to the global total of 390 GW to 430 GW. In 2023, the country installed 216.30 GW AC capacity (see Industry Expects Chinese Solar Installation Spree To Slow Down).  

China’s wind energy installations during the 1st half of 2024 totaled 25.84 GW, cumulatively reaching close to 470 GW. This means both wind and solar together have exceeded 1.18 TW installed capacity, just 20 GW shy of the 1.2 TW target that China officially targets to install by 2030.
