Key Takeaways
  • China’s solar PV additions dropped to 11.04 GW in July 2025, continuing the post-FIT slowdown trend

  • Despite the dip, 7M 2025 installations hit 223.25 GW, up nearly 100 GW year-over-year

  • CPIA has raised the forecast for 2025 to 270 GW AC to 300 GW AC, but achieving this depends on the upcoming months

China’s monthly solar PV additions continue to slow down after the June 1, 2025, feed-in-tariff (FIT) deadline. The National Energy Administration (NEA) has reported only 11.04 GW of new PV capacity in July, down from June’s 14 GW, reflecting a post-incentive installation dip.

The July 2025 PV additions are the lowest monthly installation number for China, while the highest remains the 92.92 GW NEA reported for the month of May, thanks to the installation rush (see China Solar Installations: From 100 MW In 2009 To 1 TW In 2025).

Nevertheless, 7M 2025 PV additions increased by 99.72 GW year-over-year (YoY) to 223.25 GW, compared to 123.53 GW during 7M 2024. July 2024 solar and wind additions helped China achieve its 2030 target of 1.2 TW capacity nearly 6 years ahead of the target year.

On a cumulative basis, the country’s solar PV capacity reached 1.11 TW, representing a 50.8% YoY growth, while wind power capacity rose 22.1% YoY to 570 GW, including 53.67 GW within 7M 2025.

The government estimate for solar this year is 380 GW AC, which means more than 156 GW remains to be installed. Citing provincial targets and green power mandates, the China Photovoltaic Industry Association (CPIA) revised its annual forecast to between 270 GW AC to 300 GW AC from 215 GW AC to 255 GW AC it forecast earlier (see CPIA Revises 2025 China Solar Projections Up To 300 GW AC).

With a little over 25 GW installed in the months of June and July, it remains to be seen how much the world’s largest solar market ends up bringing online this year.
