The Dominican Republic exited 2024 with the addition of 1.394 GW of new renewable energy capacity
It does not include more than 460 MW of rooftop solar capacity for self-consumption
The country also achieved a higher share of renewable energy generation than thermal power in the electricity supply for the 1st time in February 2025
The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Energy and Mines says the country installed 1.396 GW of new renewable energy capacity in 2024, including solar, wind and biomass. These energy sources represent 23.32% of the national generation capacity and an increase of more than 137% over 588 MW in 2020 when its share in the national mix was 11.94%.
This is in addition to more than 460 MW installed as rooftop solar in the residential and commercial and industrial (C&I) businesses for self-consumption.
The Dominican Republic’s Energy Minister Joel Santos said that in 2024 the country added 27 new renewable energy parks, some of which are scheduled to enter operations in 2025, contributing a total of 1,567.47 MW to the national energy system.
The minister also shared a milestone in the country’s renewable energy journey. On Saturday, February 8, 2025, renewable energy sources injected 1,222.75 MW into the grid, making it the 1st time that these surpassed thermal energy by 0.85% in the total supply of national demand, which was at 1,201.47 MW. It overshadowed the previous day’s record of 1,101 MW renewable energy generation representing 46.5% of the capacity online.
“This is a firm step towards a cleaner, more efficient and resilient energy future. Investment in renewable energy continues to bear fruit and consolidate our energy independence,” said Santos.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Dominican Republic had 1.077 GW of solar PV capacity operational at the end of 2024, representing an annual growth of 342 MW in 2023. The country’s total installed renewable energy capacity was 2.2 GW as of 2023-end.
The Dominican Republic targets a 25% share of renewable energy sources in the country’s energy matrix by 2025 (see Dominican Republic Targeting 25% Renewable Energy By 2025).
