Germany's solar PV installation capacity in the initial 4 months of 2024 has expanded to reach 5 GW, according to the latest statistics released by the country's Federal Network Agency or Bundesnetzagentur.

Comprising 1.04 GW installed in the month of April 2024, Germany added 4.98 GW. The agency has revised the monthly additions for the previous months in the Market Master Data Register (MaStR) to arrive at this total. As against 1.47 GW previously announced for January 2024, it now counts 1.51 GW for the month.

Similarly for the months of February 2024 and March 2024, the revised numbers are now 1.178 GW and 1.261 GW, as against 1.145 GW and 1.099 GW, respectively (see Germany Installed 1.1 GW New Solar In March 2024).

The 4M/2024 additions compare to over 3.71 GW the country installed during 4M/2023 (see Germany Installed 881 MW Solar In April 2023).

Maximum capacity during the period was installed in the Bayern region that topped with 1.096 GW, followed by 684.9 MW in Baden-Württemberg and Sachsen with 651.6 MW.

Installations in April 2024 were led by rooftop solar systems funded under the EEG with 572.2 MW, down from 632.9 MW in the previous month. Under the EEG tender scheme, ground mounted solar systems awarded represented a combined 323.6 MW, along with 23.8 MW of rooftop PV systems.

The newly added capacity of unsubsidized ground mounted projects declined significantly during the month with 83.1 MW compared with 186.2 MW in March 2024.

Altogether, the cumulative installed solar PV capacity of Germany rose to 82.94 GW at the end of April 2024.

Among other renewables, in April 2024 new biomass additions totaled 18 MW and onshore wind 138 MW.

Targeting 215 GW of solar PV capacity by 2030, Germany officially adopted the Solar Package I on April 26, 2024. According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK), this package will accelerate the rate of PV expansion with a simplified and less bureaucratic deployment. It also includes provisions related to residential solar including balcony solar to ensure participation of tenants, and ground-mounted installations. Grid expansion is also part of the plan.
