Utility-scale solar dominates India’s solar PV segment, as it expanded by 49% YoY to add 14.3 GW in H1 2025
The rooftop solar segment is picking up speed, installing 3.2 GW, while off-grid solar expanded by 18.6%
Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra contributed over 50% of the H1 2025 solar and wind additions
India’s solar momentum remains strong with 18.3 GW of new PV capacity added in H1 2025, marking a 51.6% year-on-year (YoY) growth, according to JMK Research & Analytics.
Utility-scale solar continues to be in the driver’s seat, as this segment brought online about 14.3 GW of new installations with a 49% annual increase. Of this, 10.6 GW was added in Q2 alone. The rooftop solar segment also expanded by 76%, bringing online close to 3.2 GW capacity during the period.
The off-grid distributed solar segment saw an improvement of about 18.6%, with the market intelligence firm pegging its additions for the period at about 816.6 MW.
Along with the wind sector that brought about 3.5 GW of new capacity online in the first half of the year with an 84% annual growth, JMK counts both these technologies to have added approximately 21.9 GW of record capacity.
Gujarat, Rajasthan and Maharashtra together contributed more than half of the H1 solar and wind capacity additions this year.
Solar now accounts for close to 50% of the total renewable energy segment, which totaled 234 GW at the end of June 2025. Wind follows next at 22%, large hydro at 21%, bio power at 5%, and small hydro at 2%.
In its recently released Annual India Solar Report Card FY 2025, JMK calculated the country to have brought online 17.4 GW of utility-scale and 5.15 GW of rooftop solar capacity, led by Rajasthan’s 6.5 GW, Gujarat’s 3.6 GW, and Maharashtra’s 2.3 GW.
It forecasts 21.15 GW of utility-scale and 7.15 GW of rooftop solar capacity to be commissioned during FY2026.
In terms of market share, according to the report writers, Waaree, JinkoSolar, LONGi, Trinasolar, and ReNew were the top 5 solar module suppliers in the country in that order, while First Solar led module exports, followed by Adani and Waaree.
Sungrow, with a 37.6% share, led the inverter segment, followed by Sineng’s 15.7% and TBEA’s 12.6% share.
