India installed 26 GW of solar capacity in H1 2026, accounting for nearly 70% of the country's total solar additions recorded in all of 2025
Rooftop solar grew 104% YoY, supported mainly by the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana
JMK Research expects India to add around 47 GW of new solar and wind capacity during 2026
India’s solar PV installations in H1 2026 increased by 43% year-on-year (YoY), adding 26 GW of capacity. JMK Research & Analytics says this number represents nearly 70% of around 38 GW the country added during CY2025 (see India Installed Close To 38 GW Solar PV Capacity In 2025).
The new additions in H1 2026 include about 19 GW of utility-scale solar capacity, a 32% increase over the previous year.
While rooftop solar additions totaled close to 6.4 GW, this segment is witnessing strong growth thanks mainly to the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSGMBY). The segment grew by 104% YoY over H1 2025, according to JMK.
The remaining capacity contribution came from offgrid/distributed solar with approximately 842.9 MW of new capacity. It was a 3% YoY improvement over the previous corresponding period.
Geographically, most installations were reported in Gujarat, with 7.6 GW of new capacity, up 29% YoY. Rajasthan followed next with 6.6 GW, an annual growth of 25%, and Tamil Nadu, where capacity increased by 9% YoY to 2.4 GW.
On the other hand, wind energy deployment declined by 16% YoY with only 2.9 GW added during H1 2026, compared to 3.5 GW in H1 2025.
JMK says solar also accounted for the largest share of the installed renewable energy capacity (288 GW) at around 56% during the reporting period, while wind followed with 20%, large hydro with 18%, bio power with 4%, and small hydro with a 2% share.
During CY2026, JMK analysts expect the country to add around 47 GW of new solar and wind capacity. It previously projected India to add approximately 42.5 GW of new solar PV capacity during CY2026 (see JMK Research Projects India To Install 42.5 GW Solar In CY2026).
According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India’s total installed solar PV capacity had reached 162.15 GW at the end of June 2026, distributed across ground-mounted, rooftop, hybrid and off-grid projects.
TaiyangNews is set to host a 2-day Round-The-Clock Power Conference.India 2026 on December 3 and 4, 2026. To be held in New Delhi, this in-person conference will bring together project developers, EPCs, utilities, along with key solar, battery storage, and other technology suppliers, investors, and policymakers to discuss enabling strategies for 24/7 power supply. Registrations for this event will open soon.
